School Wellness Policies
On June 23 and June 24, 2004, respectively, the Senate and House each unanimously passed the child nutrition reauthorization bill - Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 (Public Law 108 – 265) that was signed into law by President Bush on June 30, 2004. The Act brings about many improvements in the child nutrition programs by expanding the availability of nutritious meals and snacks to more children in school, in outside school hours programs, and in childcare; and improving the quality of food in schools.
The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) does a wonderful job highlighting the key aspects of this law on their website - FRAC Website
This law requires that all school districts that participate in the National School Lunch Program have local wellness policies by July 1, 2006.
The new law says that, at a minimum, the local policies should include:
- Goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and nutrition guidelines selected by the local educational agency for all foods available on each school campus;
- Establish a plan for measuring implementation of the local wellness policy;
- And involve parents, students, and representatives of the school food authority, the school board, school administrators, and the public in the development of the school wellness policy.
